Top Tips For Running Journeys

Here are some tips from a guy who’s probably run more Journeys courses than anyone we know. He’s Jon McKenzie a policeman and home group leader from Whakatane, New Zealand.

  • No pressure. This is a free course about a free giftナ don't screw it up by getting heavy, manipulative, preachy or demeaning to another’s views (simply offer alternatives for them to consider and trialナ if it’s the truth it will withstand scrutiny and challenge)
  • Be flexible
  • Do what ever it takes to overcome excuses and facilitate attendance of invited persons
  • Don't let the Christians on the course try to give the seekers all the answers. Tell the believers to think smart, and where necessary, keep quiet!
  • The person who said 'no' when invited this time will probably say 'yes' the next time.
  • Be patient, gracious and respectful with people who say ‘no’, but also be persistent and persuasive (over the long haul)
  • The best inviters for your next Journeys Course are the people who did your last Journeys course.
  • Don't wait till you’ve got enough people to run a course. Step out in faith and set a date. God will bring the right people and it will force you to take action.
  • Every person you deal with in life is a potential Journey’s attendee.
  • Numbers at a course aren’t the measure of success.
  • Have fun (at your own expense).
  • Create a relaxed, fun, family orientated, casual, warm, food orientated atmosphere.
  • People did not come to be preached at or convinced. They came because they’re searching. Respect that ナtherefore it’s alright for them to criticise or challenge Christianityナ again, the truth will always stand scrutiny and testing
  • Stick to the programmeナ ie on night one you want to establish that there’s a spiritual side to lifeナ do that and finish. Don’t get sucked into the other million questions that come up. Hungry people will come back for more.
  • Stick to one and a half hours and finish on the dot. Ask God to help you govern how much you say and what you say
  • Journeys (particularly in the early stages) is a course for people to air their views, concerns, questions and experiences. When we let them do that they feel ownership in the groupナ when we preach at them we confirm people’s fears, phobia’s and preconceptions.
  • Journeys has to be a place where people can think out loud safely
  • Why?????....because it works
